Barney & Friends is a childhood favorite of many, especially 90’s kids. Barney is a friendly purple dinosaur who delivers educational messages through songs and little dance routines. Fans will soon see a live-action Barney movie that’s a lot darker than the TV show.

The new film is being produced by ‘Get Out and Nope’ star Daniel Kaluuya, who recently revealed why he’s making a live-action movie about the dinosaur. The veteran actor is known for his smoldering intensity and the range of films he has starred in is nowhere near the genre he will be producing. So pursuing a project about the singing dinosaur might seem strange.

However, as of 2019, Kaluuya and his production company have a 59% stake in the film project “Barney”. The company is producing the film in cooperation with Mattel Films, the film production division of the famous toy manufacturer. Reportedly, the original impetus for a new “Barney” movie was a story centered around unconditional love fit for the present day.

Work is underway on the screenplay for the new “Barney” film. It will take a while to give the character a good plot and do him justice. Speaking to ‘Collider’, Kaluuya said: “My last series of films was pretty much centered on what I stand for as a man. But there’s a whole lot of things I do as a man. I love kids “Movies. How did everyone get into movies? Watching kids movies. I don’t want to limit myself to the limits of who I’m perceived to be.”

This project could be a completely different path for Daniel Kaluuya and also a challenging task. Daniel also hinted that his ‘Barney’ movie will be a lot darker than the TV show. “Barney & Friends” aired on PBS from 1992 to 2009 and was a ubiquitous part of many childhoods centered around positivity and unconditional love. Kaluuya also agreed that the show was one of the most memorable parts of his childhood and will always be close to his heart. Although ‘Barney & Friends’ had a theatrical appearance in 1998’s ‘Barney’s Big Adventure’, Kaluuya’s version will likely be aurally different as he certainly won’t take it into ‘gloomy reboot’ territory.
