director Baz Luhrman‘s biopic of Elvis Presleythe flashy and the exaggerated elvis, added $11 million at the domestic box office in its third weekend of release and an additional $8.7 million from overseas territories to bring worldwide collection to $155.1 million. This is a solid performance from the lengthy adult drama, which is reportedly being grossed at $85 million.

Actor relative newcomers Austin Butler as the King of Rock and Roll and tom hanks than his controversial manager Colonel tom parker, elvis is a cradle-to-grave style biopic spanning over two and a half hours, capturing virtually every significant moment in the icon’s life. Reviews were mostly positive – the film premiered to a bang at this year’s Cannes Film Festival – but many criticized it for its length and for Luhrmann’s choice to tell Elvis’s story from the perspective of Parker, essentially his adversary.

elvis‘ solid performance at the worldwide box office marks a welcome return of drama aimed at older audiences. Ridley Scott‘s House Gucci was a comparable title, but this film has caught on internationally with about as much as Elvis’ current loot. Other high-profile adult-targeted movies such as King Richard and Westside Storynotoriously bombed, as was Scott’s other 2021 release, the historical epic The last duel.

The film is currently running in 56 overseas markets and has South Korea scheduled for July 13th and all of Latin America for July 14th.
