Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo are discussing a return to the MCU and possibly a big-screen adaptation of Secret Wars.
To Avengers: Endgamedirectors Joe and Anthony Russo discuss Helming a Secret Wars Project in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Joined Marvel Studios in 2014 over Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the pair went on to become two of, if not the most, influential filmmakers in the MCU franchise. Aside from directing the last two Captain America Movies, the Russos also ended the Infinity saga by directing Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.
Infinite War and endgame are considered by many to be some of the best films from Marvel Studios. Aside from being critically acclaimed, the films were also smash hits at the box office, but making them was fraught with difficulties. The Russos filmed the films back-to-back, resulting in a year-long principal photography process. Adding to the physical challenge of working on big MCU blockbusters is the storytelling challenge of bringing so many characters together, especially given the high expectations of fans. Following Infinite War and endgameHowever, due to the success, the Russians have said they’re ready to potentially return to the MCU to headline another project, but haven’t confirmed what that might be.
Speak with meeting during the red carpet premiere of her latest film, The gray manthe Russians discussed a possible adjustment Secret Wars in the MCU. The pair admit that this story is an even more ambitious endeavor than Infinite War and endgamebut she “revered” it as children. While admitting that their last two entries have been in MCU “hard to make”, Joe and Anthony Russo said they would”gotta keep sleeping” to do the idea Secret Wars. Check out her full answer below:
Since the couple left Marvel Studios, they have focused on other ventures through their own company, AGBO Films. However, calls for a return to the franchise lingered well into Phase 4 of the MCU. Considering what the Russians were able to achieve in the franchise, it’s not surprising that the public would want them to lead another entry. However, it is worth noting that despite the interest of the Russians, it could still be a while before a Secret Wars Project happens – if at all. The universe is still rebuilding itself after the Infinity saga, so depending on how Marvel chooses to line up its next big ensemble crossover, Secret Wars for the next climactic project of the saga may still be five or more years away.
Assuming the Russians actually do come back Secret Wars, it will be interesting to see if they lead a smaller MCU project before that. A major reason they were able to come up with a satisfying ending Avengers: Endgame was that the directors had already been embedded in the franchise since 2014 and understood how the multi-story blockbuster could pay off. Come to another great ensemble finale movie like Secret Wars without being part of his setup first would complicate the Russians’ job, but audiences would no doubt be eager to see them try.
