A new main character. Captain America 4 will occur Anthony Mackie playing the starry superhero, a fact Chris Evans stressed when addressing speculation that he would return to the big screen as Steve Rogers.
“Sam Wilson is Captain America,” Evans tweeted in July 2022 after a tweet by The Hollywood Reporter claimed it was “unclear” if he would return as Cap after directing the first three films.
“It’s unclear if Chris Evans would reprise his role as the first #CaptainAmerica (although all bets are off if the question of who is eligible to carry the shield continues)” THR tweeted back then. “Having stacked casts on solo outings is a key Marvel ingredient at this point.”
It’s worth noting that Evans hasn’t denied speculation that he would appear, but he did confirm what fans have known since then Avengers: Endgame — Steve Rogers is no longer Captain America. The Brooklyn-born hero passed the title on to Sam Wilson (FKA Falcon) at the end of the 2019 film, which was Evans’ final appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Audiences saw Mackie’s character come to terms with the weight of Steve’s legacy and eventually accept his role as the new Captain America in the 2021 Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. In the last episode’s credits, a title card was read Captain America and the Winter Soldier, confirming that Sam has worked through his concerns and fully accepted the mantle. That light year star endorsed Mackie’s promotion.
“Nobody is better suited for this. I mean, [Mackie] honestly does it justice,” Evans told Yahoo in June 2022. “I’m so proud of him. I can’t wait to see what they do with it in the future but if there are tears it’s only for the sweet memories I had.”
While the Boston native made it clear that Steve Rodgers is no longer the superhero with the stars and stripes, there’s always a chance he will show up. His character survived endgame and went back in time to be reunited with his love interest, Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell). That knife out Star doesn’t want to ruin this ending.
“That seems like something people would like to see,” Evans told ComicBook.com in June. “I don’t want to disappoint anyone but it’s hard… It’s been such a good run and I’m so happy with it. It’s so precious to me. It would have to be perfect. It would just be scary to shake something I hold so dear to my heart once again. This role means so much to me. So it would be a great challenge to revisit it.”
