Movie musicals are a tried and true genre in the industry and one that often commands attention during awards season. Hard to believe, but it’s been 15 years hairspray Movie hit theaters in 2007. Nikki Blonsky’s big break came when she landed the role of Tracy Turnblad in Adam Shankmans hairspray (opens in new tab) Movie. This transformed the young actress from ice cream parlor to movie star, opening up more career opportunities for her in the future. I had the opportunity to speak to Blonsky about her experiences with hairspray, where she revealed her immediate connection with the brave protagonist of this beloved musical. As she put it

My love affair with hairspray began long before I got involved in the film, even before auditioning. I saw it when I was 15 for my 15th birthday. And I remember sitting at the movies with my mom and from the moment I heard the first “Uh oh oh” on “Good Morning Baltimore,” I literally nudged my mom and said, “I can do that. “From then on, I had this feeling from watching the show to the moment we walked out of the theater, I was like, ‘This is her. I have to play that girl one day.’ I didn’t know how, I didn’t know when. But I knew Tracy had to be a part of my life somehow.
