In an interview with the Script Apart Podcast, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull Author David Koepp says he feels making the main premise about extraterrestrials was a mistake. In the film, the crystal skull serving as the film’s MacGuffin turned out to be the skull of an ancient alien species. Koepp says he tried to dissuade Spielberg and George Lucas, but he couldn’t change their minds.
“I was never happy with the idea,” Koepp said. “When I came on, I tried to convince [director Steven Spielberg and franchise co-creator George Lucas] to change it – I had this other idea. They didn’t want to change it. I’m not saying mine would have been any better. But I think a big part of the backlash this movie received, in a larger sense, aside from little things that people might not like — that were too silly or whatever — the bigger one was that, “We feel don’t feel like aliens should have been in one Indiana Jones Movie.’ Fair enough, in hindsight you’re probably right.”
