Steven Yeun reveals details about his character in the upcoming sci-fi horror movie nope, the latest project from filmmaker Jordan Peele. Yeun, known for his roles in the Walking Dead, combustion, OK yesand his Oscar-nominated levy MinariShe will star in the film alongside Daniel Kaluuya and Keke Palmer. The film will be released on July 22nd and will be distributed by Universal Pictures.
nope follows OJ (Kaluuya) and Emerald (Palmer) Haywood, two siblings who live on a movie ranch and study a series of random objects falling from the sky in hopes of catching footage of a UFO. Along the way, they cross paths with former child star Jupe Park (Yeun) and documentary filmmaker Antlers Holst (Michael Wincott), about whom Peele has kept many details nope under wraps, similar to the secrecy of his earlier films Go out and Us to keep as many surprises as possible for the audience.
In an interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Yeun reveals as many details as possible about his character, choosing his words carefully to protect the film’s secrecy. Yeun explains that his character Jupe Park is a former child star and currently runs a theme park centered around the movie that made him famous as a kid. He doesn’t explain how the character plays into the story or themes, but his role will potentially feed into the surreal black humor that runs amongst Peele’s films. Read the following quote from Yeun:
I can say that I play a character named Ricky “Jupe” Park, who is a former child star and he owns his own theme park that is closely related to the movie he was in that blew him up as a kid . That’s really all I can say.
With nope‘s bizarre marketing techniques and creepy trailers, it’s anyone’s guess how Yeun’s character will play into the story. However, he will certainly play a big role as he is third in the credits behind Kaluuya and Palmer. With Peele’s talent for symbolism and underlying themes, it’s likely that Yeun’s character represents in some ways the darker side of show business as someone constantly struggling for relevance.
Peele’s imagination and mastery of tone and story put him at the forefront of the conversation in modern horror Go out and Us. Now that he’s proven himself as a talented filmmaker, he’s in a position where he can really push the envelope in terms of ambition and spectacle, something nope might be able to pull through with a commitment to the genre and strong performances. With so many questions about nope yet to be answered, it’s good that fans have a little more information about Yeun’s character if they dig into it, even as the marketing continues to confuse and intrigue.
