No, director Jordan Peele’s latest film hit US theaters last month. But any fans wanting to watch it at home should be prepared to wait a while for it to be available online to stream it via a subscription service.
Last year an unprecedented number of new movies were streamed online the same day they hit theaters. But this year, as COVID-19 restrictions have eased and audiences have returned to theaters, the practice has all but disappeared — particularly for films with summertime blockbuster aspirations. Pretty much all films are now hitting theaters exclusively for at least a month and a half, but those timeframes are all over the chart.
Which service will Nope stream first?
No, it’s expected to stream first on Peacock. Peele’s Monkeypaw production company has a deal with Universal Pictures and the film will be distributed in the US by Universal. Peacock and Universal are owned by the same parent company, and Peacock’s arrangement is said to be the first place to stream films distributed by Universal.
When is Nope’s streaming release date?
Peacock and Universal have not yet confirmed the streaming release date for the film. No, but here’s what you should know:
- In general, the film should begin streaming on Peacock sometime between September 5th and November 18th. Peacock can start streaming theatrical films like Nope 45 days after the theatrical release, but no later than 120 days. If Nope met Peacock exactly after that 45-day deadline, it would be available to stream there on September 5th. If the film waits until its 120th release day, it will hit Peacock on November 18th.
- Unfortunately, Universal’s other big summer movies don’t offer much precedent: Jurassic World Dominion and Minions: The Rise of Gru are the two biggest blockbusters the company has distributed so far this year, but neither has confirmed streaming release dates for Peacock yet. Jurassic World Dominion, which came out on June 10, has passed its 45th day in theaters with no word on when it will stream. As for Rise of Gru, which came out a month later, its streaming date is also a mystery.
- Streaming release dates are unpredictable! The next film from Peele’s Monkeypaw production company (titled Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul) will stream on Peacock the same day it hits theaters, on September 2 -Day streaming release isn’t in View. But placeholders like Honk for Jesus don’t contribute to predictability.
Will Nope be free to stream on Peacock?
Very unlikely. Peacock routinely puts movies like Nope behind its paywall.
If you don’t already have a Peacock Premium subscription, you’ll need to sign up for a $5/month or $10/month premium tier if you want to watch the movie or other Peacock paywall programs (such asPremier League matches, WWE, The Office and other popular content.)
peacock hasthis could reduce or even eliminate your premium membership costs.
However, the film is expected to be available to paying Peacock Premium subscribers without any additionally Fee. So if you’re already a premium subscriber to Peacock, you can stream it like anything else on the service.
