Jordan Peele’s next horror storm is brewing on the horizon, with stars Daniel Kaluuya and Keke Palmer set to pounce on a windswept desert outpost nope hits theaters later this month. But if you’re already plugged into Meta’s VR gaming ecosystem, you don’t have to wait until then to make your own way through some of the film’s desolately spooky locations.
Put on a Meta Quest 2 headset (the same hardware as the Oculus Quest 2 before last year’s “Meta” rebrand) and get ready for an intrepid virtual journey through your very own Peele-themed sci-fi quest. A VR experience based on nope and other films from Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions launch users in Meta’s horizon worlds Hub base… before venturing into immersively unsettling territory.
How come you from hanging out horizon worlds to stumble nope Locations like the desolate, heaven-cursed Haywood Ranch from the film? We leave the backdrop to the Oculus blog:
“The multi-world VR experience begins with Monkeypaw Productions: All aboard, in which you find yourself as a passenger on the Monkeypaw train before traveling to the other worlds. Inside, you can walk through the shacks and find Easter eggs from the movies nope, Go outand Us… You then have the opportunity to visit them NOPE World: by Monkeypaw Productions. Here you’ll find a recreation of the Haywood Ranch from the film’s trailers, as well as several mini-games and other interactive elements.
The Easter egg angle is particularly eye-catching, because a Peele production is about well-hidden treasures, about more than just superficial fan service. “I’m obsessed with Easter eggs,” the director admitted Empire Magazine earlier this month. “I’m obsessed with connections. I love rewarding the person who wants to come and just watch a movie and forget about it. I love rewarding the person who wants to watch 100 times.”
The mini-games look less like steep challenges and more like gates you can delve deeper into nope‘s sci-fi rabbit hole. But that might turn out to be a good thing, as your eyes will likely have to pay attention to the spooky ambience of the film (and the VR experience). On the surface, nope follows two visitors as they uncover the mysteries behind spooky phenomena in a derelict tourist trap in Old West California — but documenting their discoveries becomes what Peele confided as “an adventure on film.” Rich.
nope may be the movie of the moment, but it’s not the only Peele blockbuster soon to be explored in Meta’s VR realm. experiences with places and sights Go out and Us are also in the works, with two new VR adventures — Get out of the world and we world – to land later this summer from Monkeypaw Productions.
In the meantime, plug in the VR peele verse All aboard and NOPE worldeach available immediately in horizon worlds (which is free to download on Quest 2.) Consider it a first-hand feel for the shady side of the spooky ranch nope hits theaters on July 22nd.
