There are plenty of scratchy movies that come and go, and right now it’s at the top of the “what exactly is this?” question. list is forthcoming Barbie Movie. With the star power of Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Will Ferrell, Simu Liu, Kate McKinnon and more on board, as well as Oscar nominee Greta Gerwig behind the camera, it’s unclear how the film will end and be received. However, Ryan Gosling recently said he was making the film “for the Kens of the world.”

Barbie has been in development for a long time, going through many directors, writers and actors before settling on its current cast of talent. However, in all this time there is still no one who seems to know exactly what that is Barbie film will be about, or what type of audience the film will be aimed at. For his part, Ryan Gosling has now clarified why he’s making the film, although it has to be said that his comments are more than a little tongue-in-cheek. While at the premiere of The gray manhis new Netflix movie, Gosling said diversity:


“It’s been like this my whole life. I think a lot of Kens will feel seen when they see this. I have to do it for the kens of the world. Nobody plays with Kens!”

Barbie Won’t be what anyone expects

So far, a common thread has run through the comments of those involved Barbie, and that’s the movie isn’t going to be what anyone thinks it is. That line was said by Margot Robbie when she was first announced for the lead role, by director Grewig, and now by Gosling as he briefly teased the film further. He continued:

“It’s not what you think. Unless it is, and then you know what it is, but I don’t think it is what you think it is. I can’t wait for people to see the film. That’s all I can say or Mattel will come and get me.”

Although there is still no official synopsis for Barbie, a leaked synopsis suggests the film will see Barbie and Ken live in Barbieworld along with other Barbie and Ken variants. Disillusioned with her life, Barbie wants to be part of the real world, and together with Ken, she escapes and ends up being hunted by a toy company owner, played by Ferrell. Set photos appear to support this, with images showing Robbie and Gosling being roller-skate chased by Ferrell, but other than that, there’s no official word yet on whether that’s the actual plot.

In the end, everyone involved in the project seems confident that they are working on a great film, and despite the previously very stereotypical Barbie images with lots of pink and fluorescent colors everywhere, that belief is still there that the film will surpass any expectations that people have have to the film. We’ll find out the truth next summer, when Barbie comes to the cinemas.
