Ryan Gosling reveals new details from the Barbie movie story that suggest his Ken is actually pretty miserable in the live-action adaptation.
Ryan Gosling’s Ken is in Barbie seems worse than expected. Oscar-winning lady bird Director Greta Gerwig directs the upcoming live-action based on Mattel’s iconic doll. A Barbie The live-action film has been in the works for over a decade, although Amy Schumer and Anne Hathaway initially feuded over the lead character’s role. But after Warner Bros. took over, Margot Robbie was cast as Barbie. Sometime later, Gosling joined the cast as Ken, Barbie’s male counterpart. filming on Barbie has been running since spring, theatrical release is in summer 2023.
Although plot details off Barbie are slim, the film is clearly not another run-of-the-mill fairy tale. Rather, it is expected to subvert expectations and explore issues such as identity and feminism. Reports also suggest there will be multiple Barbies and Kens in the live action Barbie, with Emma Mackey, Issa Rae, and Hari Nef possibly playing alternate versions of the title character. Meanwhile, Simu Liu and Ncuti Gatwa are said to portray different kens. Only two official looks of Gosling’s Ken and Robbie’s Barbie have been unveiled so far, but multiple set photos have confirmed the western-themed and fluro-colored roller skate costumes that the two leads will wear at various stages.
Now in a new interview with CNN, Gosling revealed more details about his Ken. The actor spoke about his Barbie character while dodging questions about his upcoming Netflix movie, The gray man. Unfortunately, it seems Gosling’s Ken is more depressing than expected. Gosling explained that Ken was penniless and unemployed Barbie and is going through a rough patch when he runs into Robbie’s protagonist and says:
“This Ken life is even harder than the ‘Gray Man’ life, I think. Ken has no money, he has no job, he has no car, he has no house. He’s going through a lot.”
Although Gosling could only be joking with that previous answer Barbie Photos and videos from film sets suggest that his Ken is not a conventional film hero. A previous video showed Robbie’s Barbie stomping on a groper, but instead of coming to her rescue, Gosling’s Ken is startled by the action and lets out a high-pitched scream. In another video, Barbie appears to be taken away by law enforcement while Ken stands behind her and does not intervene to avoid arrest. However, nothing about them Barbie Set photos have teased the struggling Ken, which Gosling puts up in these comments.
Taken together, the set photos and Gosling’s new comments suggest that his Ken may be faint-hearted and dependent on Barbie to support him. This unexpected dynamic between the main characters fits perfectly with the expected themes of feminism Barbie, as well as Gerwig’s signature storytelling, which often focuses on strong and complex women. While Gosling does joke about Ken’s distressed state in the film, the discontinued videos and images still show him as a vulnerable character. Of course there is a whole year before that Barbie release date is coming, So there’s still some time to learn more about Gosling’s take on this iconic doll.
