Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness author Michael Waldron reveals that Scarlet Witch was supposed to be a villain in another Marvel film.

Scarlet Witch was originally intended to be a villain avenger 5 before she gets in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Wanda Maximoff has always been the black sheep of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, but she’s embraced her villainess fully Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. In the Phase 4 film, she faces off against Doctor Strange, who leads the masters of the mystical arts to protect Earth from interdimensional threats. But as it turns out, Marvel Studios planned on rescuing Scarlet Witch to be a much bigger antagonist in the MCU.

Unlike most one-off villains, Wanda is more of a morally ambiguous character in the franchise. Her life has been marked by tragedy so far, and the lack of a consistent support system tends to easily lead her down a dark path. Her latest loss came in WandaVision where she was forced to abandon her ideal life and part with Vision and their two children in order to free the people of Westview. Further corrupted by the Darkhold, Wanda assumes her role as the Scarlet Witch and embarks on a journey across the multiverse to reunite with her children, Tommy and Billy. Until Doctor Strange gets involved in trying to stop her from wreaking havoc across multiple realities and protecting her target, America Chavez.

Still, Marvel Studios didn’t originally want Wanda to be the villain Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. While the studio always knew she would ultimately take a villainous path, they saved her antagonistic debut for one avenger Movie. But, as revealed by author Michael Waldron in the latest built episode on Disney+, he was able to convince the company to scrap them and instead pit them against Doctor Strange. Making you the villain from the start. It was always like, ‘Well, that’s going to happen in an Avengers movie or something.’ My perspective was, ‘Why are we letting another movie get the best villain of all time?’

Wanda already acted as an Avengers villain in her debut Avengers: Age of Ultron. She and her brother Pietro Maximoff were blinded by anger when they blamed Iron Man for their parents’ deaths. After participating in HYDRA’s Mind Stone experiment, the twins teamed up with the corrupt AI Ultron to take on Earth’s mightiest heroes. However, they eventually realized their mistake and switched sides to help the Avengers defeat Ultron. Wanda ended up becoming a member of the New Avengers, until the Lagos tragedy once again cast her in a bad light. The last time the Avengers faced Wanda she was young. Had Marvel Studios stuck with her plan, it would have been so interesting to see her former allies try to contain the threat she poses.

It’s hard not to be disappointed when you think about how Scarlet Witch’s villainous turn could have happened on a much larger scale. She was an integral part of it Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, she was still a supporting character, so the movie couldn’t fully focus on her. The Sam Raimi-directed film’s ending hinted that she could be on her way to a redemption arc. If that’s the case, it’s highly unlikely that Marvel Studios will send her down a dark path again just so she can be one avenger 5 villain.
