The latest feature film from Marvel Studios Thor: Love and Thunder Has officially in cinemas! The Chris Hemsworth-directed sequel reunited many cast members from previous Thor films including, but not limited to, Dr. Jane Foster, capable of wielding Thor’s hammer Mjolnir, which grants her superpowers. Taika Waititi was once again in the director’s chair. The New Zealand filmmaker was credited with reviving Thor’s character in 2017 Ragnarok.

If you would sit through the whole thing Thor 4 Credits, they would not only find the traditional post-credits scene, but also a unique but noteworthy message: Thor will return.” As of now, no other Thor solo film has been greenlit, nor has Hemsworth been announced to appear in an upcoming MCU project. However, the actor has previously stated that he is more than ready to play the character again.

But what about Waititi? Would he return to direct his third film in the Thor franchise?

Waititi discusses a possible Thor 5

Taika Waititi, Thor

In conversation with Insider, Thor: Love and Thunder Director Taika Waititi shared his reaction to the news of “Thor Will Return” which was shown at the end of the film, noting that initially he didn’t know it had been added.

“Well you know what? That was a surprise for me too. I’m not joking. I saw it in the theater and I was like, ‘Oh shit. Really?” Even Chris said, “What?” But of course he’ll be back. He’s the best character. I mean, I might be a little biased, but he’s the most fun to watch.”

Waititi also discussed what it would take to get him to do another Thor movie. He mentioned one specific requirement: Chris Hemsworth must also come back.

Well I don’t know what would come next. I would definitely do one, but only if Chris does it. But it would have to be something surprising and unexpected for me to want to do it. For example, what would the new take be? The battles and all fights are okay, but I would like something that felt unexpected when it comes to the story. Like just making a $5 million movie with no fighting, just Thor on a road trip. Like “Nebraska”.

An ‘unexpected’ Thor sequel?

There are many ways the next Thor movie could be unexpected and unpredictable. Taika Waititi doesn’t appear to be resting on his laurels and would likely continue to push the boundaries of imaginations of what Thor and his film franchise can be.

before Thor: Ragnarok, the character had been a sort of stoic warrior with the occasional quip or silly comment. This approach was so stale for Hemsworth that he considered quitting the role. When Waititi came on board, he brought his signature goofy, irreverent comedy style to the franchise. love and thunder is very much in the same vein and may have even dialed in the comedy factor more.

The director is clearly a Thor fan, as evidenced by his comments above. saying “He’s the best character” is high praise, especially considering there are so many other wonderful Marvel characters. Taika Waititi, who cites Hemsworth’s engagement as a seemingly tough and fast requirement for directing another film, speaks volumes. But the two work well together and Waititi seems to know how to get the best possible performance out of the actor.

It should be noted that Waititi had previously played coy about his involvement in a potential sequel. He seems to have changed his attitude a bit since making those comments.

As for the assurance that the character will return, it’s interesting that Marvel would include that without being headed by Waititi or Hemsworth, but as the former said: “Of course he’s coming back.” Finally, as mentioned above, Hemsworth himself has stated that he is poised for more performances as the Asgardian Thunder God.

Marvel Studios Thor: Love and Thunder only plays in theaters now.
