It is no secret Marvel Movies have many moving parts behind the scenes that take a concept from paper to the big screen. And in the latest version Thor: Love and ThunderFilmmaker Taika Waititi balances a fun comedic tone with some heavier themes, along with other elements such as screaming space goats, Russell Crowe’s ridiculous Zeus and such. In between, Waititi appears to have inserted the wrong take of Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie in the last film, as the actress has noted and pointed out.
Taika Waititi and Tessa Thompson recently teamed up for vanity fair‘s series Notes on a scene, where filmmakers and actors delve deep into a single scene of a film and explain everything that goes on in it. Check out the moment the Valkyrie actress shows her director an edit that would have been better as a blooper:
Now I’ll be honest, I didn’t notice that little movie glitch when I caught it the fun emotional roller coaster ride that is Thor: Love and Thunder, but Tessa Thompson sure did. Sharing with Taika Waititi, he left a shot of her performance where she was supposed to react to Chris Hemsworth’s Thor waking up from the shared vision with Asguardian children. In that brief moment, Valkyrie looks like she’s reacting with surprise at something for no reason.
Taika Waititi gave an embarrassed laugh at the revelation and admitted he never realized it. Tessa Thompson brushes and laughs at it, saying she “don’t mind” and that it’s “kinda funny.” As she also commented, “It doesn’t make sense,” but she “loves it.” Also in Thompson’s words:
The performance used to make sense because he woke up. He would ‘Ah!’ and that was my reaction. But now I just do it for no reason, which is cool, and it’s also a reference to how sometimes someone can make a performance look crazy when it wasn’t.
More than anything, this little editing error is funnier than anything. Next time we’ll start Thor: Love and Thunder We can see the brief moment and giggle about it, just like Waititi and Thompson. It’s also a reminder that there’s so much going on in the production of a Marvel film like this that a few mistakes are bound to creep in every now and then. It’s rare (and funny in this case) that the actress points this out to her director on videotape.
