The spinoff show Batman’s Arkham Asylum has the potential to pay off one of the most interesting ideas from Ben Affleck’s defunct Batman film.
A Arkham Asylum HBO Max show that serves as the spin-off of The Batman is in development, and an idea of Ben Affleck’s demolition could pay off Batman Movie. Even before Matt Reeves’ Batman relaunch hit cinemas, spin-offs set in the world of The Batman have already been discussed by Warner Bros. and HBO Max. In addition to the Arkham Asylum-centric show, a penguin spinoff series, The Penguinalso takes place.
Before Matt Reeves was given the opportunity to create a brand new version of Batman that would reboot the franchise, Ben Affleck had a hand in not only starring but also directing a Batman film. While Affleck’s Batman film never materialized, information then surfaced about what the story would be about and what characters it would feature. Joe Manganiello’s Deathstroke, who appeared briefly in it justice league and in the Snyder Cut Knightmare timeline he was supposed to be the main villain and Batgirl would make an appearance too. More than these characters, the most exciting thing about Ben Afflecks Batman film is that it would have been a psychological thriller set in Arkham Asylum.
albeit in a completely different context, The Batman‘s Arkham Asylum Spinoff can delve into the same idea. In fact, Matt Reeves did mention that the show will focus on the horror aspects of Arkham Asylum and how such a strange place might change after the events of The Batman. This is very similar to Ben Affleck Batman A solo film would have explored Arkham, something other iterations of the Caped Crusader, like Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, haven’t done. The biggest difference between Ben Affleck’s untold Batman movie and Reeves’ upcoming film Arkham Asylum, however, is that the latter will most likely not feature Batman – at least not as a main character. Instead, it will likely focus on the Arkham Asylum facility itself and the psychological aspects of its patients.
Although Arkham Asylum is a crucial element in the Batman mythos, it has been consistently overlooked by the Batman films. The Arkham facility was barely mentioned during the Burton and Schumacher runs. in the Batman beginspart of the story involved the experiments of Arkham and Dr. Jonathan Crane, but neither The dark knight still The Dark Knight rises ever visit the place again. Because of this, any live-action Batman project that takes place primarily in Arkham is an exciting concept. Ben Affleck’s film would have had the benefit of a hero who’s been around for 20 years, meaning his Arkham could have featured Batman’s entire roster of villains. The Batman‘s Arkham Asylum spin-off, on the other hand, can show the origins of the rogues’ gallery and tell the story of how a mental institution became one of Gotham’s most dangerous places.
Ben Affleck canceled Batman is another addition to the long list of Batman films that were never made, but at least the idea of exploring Arkham Asylum may have some payoff in the time to come The Batman spinoff show. As of now, there is neither a release date nor a confirmed creative team for the HBO Max production. It will be interesting to see how connected The Batman the Arkham Asylum show and whether big names like Joker and the Riddler or even the Dark Knight himself will be featured.
