Actors are the face of a film; Directors (along with screenwriters) are the people with the vision behind the film.

Since the silent film era, however, there have been numerous examples of actors and directors being one and the same. In some cases, wearing two hats has worked beautifully; in others not so much.

To identify the best and worst films by famous actors, 24/7 Tempo has compiled a list of nearly six dozen films directed by characters known more for their on-screen performances than their behind-the-camera skills. We ranked them by developing an index of average ratings IMDBan online movie database from Amazon, and a combination of viewership and tomatometer results Rotten tomatoes, an online aggregator of film and television reviews, as of May 2022, which weights all reviews equally. Director and cast credits are from IMDb. (The equation also works in reverse. These are 20 Famous Directors Who Have Starred In Other People’s Movies.)

The most amazing actor-director hyphenate was probably comedy icon Charlie Chaplin who not only directed most of the films he starred in but also wrote and in some cases produced them and wrote their musical scores.

On the other hand, the legendary Charles Laughton, known for his starring roles in such notable films of the mid-20th century, directed only one film – the 1955 noir thriller Night of the Huntsman – in which he did not appear. (Though it was initially received lukewarmly, it’s now considered a classic.)

Some films with actors behind the camera have won Oscars. For example, Kevin Costner played both the lead role and his directorial debut in Dances With Wolves, and won seven Academy Awards in 1990, including Best Director and Best Picture. Bradley Cooper recently made his own directorial debut in the latest theatrical version of A Star Is Born, which he also starred in. It was nominated for eight Academy Awards, although it only won for Best Original Song. (These are directors who were nominated for an Oscar on their first try.)
