If Daniel Craig’s tenure as James Bond had ended 10 years ago, in 2012, he would have been as loved and respected for the role as he is today. That’s true spook (2015) and no time to die (2021) brought additional pathos to the story of Craig’s 007, truth is, this era of the long-running spy franchise never really surpassed a particular movie. if Casino royale that was 1977 war of stars the Daniel Craig Bond era, that is skyfall his Reich strikes back.

skyfall Netflix just came out on August 5, 2022, but it hit theaters on November 9, 2012, which was kind of tight ten years ago. At that time six years had passed since Craig’s first Bond, casino royale, and four years since the less-than-stellar follow-up, Quantum of consolation. In 2012, it wasn’t entirely clear whether Daniel Craig’s James Bond would go down in history as a film Great Bond, or just a good Bond who was just in a good movie that everyone agreed he liked. Essentially before skyfallCraig’s Bond tenure more closely resembled that of Timothy Dalton; Great Actor, Great in the role, but only Casino royale was solid, and six years was a long time to wait for another good Daniel Craig James Bond film.

skyfall reintroduced the character of Moneypenny, played perfectly by Naomie Harris.

But, skyfall The wait was worth it. Not only did it prove that Craig might just be the best Bond film of all time, but it almost immediately became the best Bond film of all time. And, skyfall Strangely enough, this was achieved through a massive contradiction: the film is both a critique of all James Bond films up to this point in time, and Also a smooth reboot that reintroduced some classic elements from the older films into the Craig era. skyfall is funnier than Casino royale, but also manages to take Bond’s character seriously without upsetting everyone. All Craig-era films attempt this dichotomy, but none quite manage the balancing act skyfall.

List all reasons skyfall is (probably) the best Bond film of all time, would be a bit boring but let’s try a few and see what happens.

  • Great song? Check. Adele’s Skyfall is perfect.
  • Good chase scenes? Yes, the opening scene of skyfall is one of the best in Bond history.
  • Villain? IMPRESSIVE. Was there a better Bond villain than Javier Bardem as Silva?
  • cool cars? Bond takes M (Judi Dench) on a beautiful road trip in his classic Aston Martin DB5. So yes.
  • Plot? The film begins with Bond coming shot and to lose and ends up having to figure out how to move on after his surrogate mother is killed. LIGHT UP.

Old-school Bond purists are probably saying, wait, wait, wait and buts, buts, and mention things like golden finger and how that Sean Connery movie made up all the tropes or the fact that dr No is an unassailable classic. And to all this I say Yes indeed. I also like James Bond films. But if you want to talk to most people and show them a Bond film that you can safely say is the best Bond film, you can say skyfall and at least 99 percent of non-hardcore fans will agree with you.

skyfall is like The dark knight of James Bond films. It’s brilliantly directed (by Sam Mendes!), every single performance is perfect, it captures what makes the character so compelling, and it manages to do something new with very old tropes. Even the Super Transgressive no time to die didn’t mix the cocktail quite the same way, or if it did, some elements came out a bit too strong.

Bond claims to perform his martinis shaken instead of stirred. But, skyfall feels like a cocktail stirred slowly and carefully. Many other (wonderful!) Bond films feel shattered in the way they are made, paced, or edited. skyfall is a great action movie first and foremost, but it’s also just a really great movie, in every genre. At certain moments you actually forget you’re watching a Bond film, which means it feels doubly exciting when you’re sucked back into this spy universe.

skyfall is the only Bond film in which James Bond returns to his childhood home, the “Rosebud”. Citizen Kane-ing of 007. At the time, that choice felt daringly grounded. And now that I see the film a decade later, skyfall also feels like coming home.
