Blumhouse Productions is distinguished by its willingness to give directors creative freedom and to make the most of its relatively small budgets, and has proven itself with films such as ” whiplash and BlackKkKlansmanHowever, the production house has always had an ingrained connection to horror films.

The horror film genre has enjoyed a dramatic revival in the 21st century and Blumhouse Productions has played a significant role in this. After they like with their early films Paranormal Activityand insidiousthey routinely experimented with the tropes of the genre, making everything from genre-bending horror comedies to psychological thrillers that challenge our ideas about society.

‘The Black Telephone’ (2022)

Just the latest in a long line of spine-tingling horror movies, The black phone sees Blumhouse Productions return to the heart of horror with a truly terrifying viewing experience. Related to Joe Hill‘s short story follows a teenager who is kidnapped by a serial child kidnapper and uses a mysterious phone to communicate with previous victims.

Atmospheric and spooky, with plenty of jump scares, the film makes the most of what’s available to it, particularly the talents of the two young stars. Mason Thames and Madeleine McGraw. The production house’s ongoing relationship with frequent collaborators Ethan Hawke Reaching new heights as well, with Hawke being downright terrifying as The Grabber.

‘Quiet’ (2016)

A well-crafted home invasion horror hits us where we feel vulnerable, and silence makes the movie even more intense by giving us a deaf-mute protagonist and a really evil villain. Trapped alone in her secluded home after a homicidal stalker kills her friend Maddie (Kate Siegel) must fight to survive a long and tiring night.

It marks Mike Flanagan‘s second collaboration with Blumhouse Productions and highlighted his talent for building suspense and inventing great horror sequences that won’t soon be forgotten. Fans of the directors continue to work The Haunting of Hill House, midnight fairand some of his more recent films would do well to give them silence a watch if you missed it.


“The Purge” (2013)

High-concept horror isn’t very common, especially in film, but that’s exactly what fans got The purge. With Ethan Hawke and Lena Headeyit takes place in the not too distant future where the US government has decided to legalize all crime for a period of 12 hours annually to combat rising crime numbers.

For many, the night is a window of danger to survive, but that becomes difficult for a suburban family when they accidentally start protecting a man wanted by a malicious mob. The high-stakes home invasion horror that followed spawned an expanded universe of Clean movies and captured audience interest with his social commentary.

‘Paranormal Activity’ (2007)

Blumhouse Productions landed their first big hit in 2007 with “Supernatural Horror”. Paranormal Activity. The film makes the most of its meager budget, using its iconic mockumentary approach to suspenseful perfection. He follows a young couple who are being haunted by a demon.

It used the Launchpad, which was discontinued by eight years earlier The Blair Witch Project to inspire a renewed fanaticism in horror films that aspired to be more than sickeningly gory slasher films. The unprecedented financial turnover saw the birth of a Paranormal Activity series and was a monumental step for the horror film revival that is still enjoyed today.

‘Halloween’ (2018)

Although it is the 11th installment of the 2018 franchise Halloween is not only the best of the sequels, it’s the only one worth pursuing John Zimmermanis the 1978 original. Blumhouse Productions, along with some help from Carpenter himself, made the best of the legacy sequel tag and retconned the ending of the very first Halloween and ignores the decades of lackluster sequels and spin-offs that have followed.

In this take on the Halloween Story, Michael Myers was imprisoned after his attack on Haddonfield in 1978, but he escapes imprisonment and returns to the small town with a vengeance. Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) is a heavily drunk paranoid loner who has long awaited Michael’s return. Their expected confrontation certainly does not disappoint.

‘Split’ (2016)

A wild ride that is disturbing, focused and very funny at times, Splits was a resounding and rewarding return to form for M. Night Shyamalan. He allowed his love of Hitchcock’s horror to flow onto the screen, creating an atmospheric and intense thriller that pushed audiences to the edge of their seats.

James McAvoyThe playful and deranged portrayal of a man with 23 different personalities is among the most underrated performances of recent years, and his ability not only to command each of the different personalities, but to switch seamlessly between them is a memorable part of the film. Shyamalan fans Unbreakable would have loved it with a late cameo too Bruce Willis See Splits referred to as the very first “stealth sequel”.


‘Happy Death Day’ (2017)

horror movies that give Groundhog Day Treatment, Happy death anniversary presented a fun and lively twist on the typical slasher flick. Taking center stage is Theresa ‘Tree’ Gelbman (a breakout performance by Jessica Rothe), a college student who is forced to relive the day of her murder over and over again until she finds out who it is that wants her dead.

Don’t be afraid to mix genres like slasher horror, teen comedy and even romance, Happy death anniversary tends to deliver a flashy, fast-paced petri dish of a film that carries a fun-loving energy throughout. It may not bring life revelations to the viewer, but it allowed Blumhouse Productions to play with the horror genre once again, and the end result was a delightful surprise.

‘Freaky’ (2020)

Blumhouse Productions has found some of its biggest hits through its willingness to experiment with genres and concepts, but even for them, Freaky was a crazy movie. Originally titled “Freaky Friday the 13th”, it is a body swap slasher film with main cast Vince Vaughn as a serial killer who switches bodies with one of his targets, a teenage girl struggling with the trials and tribulations of high school.

As good as it is to see Vaughn as a 17-year-old girl, the real gem of the film is her counterpart Kathryn Newton who thrives when she leaves the schoolgirl routine and embraces the mantle of the Blissfield Butcher. Clever, funny and aware of the tropes of the genre, Freaky is a gory slasher flick for everyone to enjoy.

‘The Invisible Man’ (2020)

A brilliant, modern and timely reinterpretation of the classic HG Wells novel (and of course the 1933 film starring it Claude Rain), Leigh Wannell deals with a stunning thriller that says a lot with its concept. Elizabeth Moss stars as a woman haunted by her ex-boyfriend, a scientist who she believes faked his suicide and is terrorizing her with a camouflage suit he invented.

It’s wacky, refreshing and full of social commentary that Whannell and Moss seem to be embracing with open arms. The end result is a masterfully executed horror film that, along with a compelling story, has all the frights to excite die-hard fans of the genre.

‘Out’ (2017)

If you like movies Paranormal Activity started the resurgence of horror films, then mainstream hits like Go out saw the revival of the genre complete. They also showed how far Blumhouse Productions had taken the genre in the decade, from acclaimed but largely unappreciated successes to the glamor and glitz of the Oscars.

Jordan PeeleHis sensational directorial debut was nominated for four Academy Awards, with the writer/director winning one for his screenplay. The psychological terror that underpins the film—as well as the hilarious satire that defined it for too many—attempted to pull the rug out from under the dormant dog of society, namely the casual racism and general ignorance it felt.
