Continued production delays from the pandemic will result in a drought for tentpole films through the end of October
IMAX and other top movie theater chains are set to release their second-quarter earnings reports next week, and are expected to take a victory lap on the best deal they’ve seen since the pandemic shutdown. But that windfall will end abruptly – more or less immediately, actually – with no tentpole films on the release schedule for the next three months.
While it is possible for some late summer and early fall titles to generate profits for their studios, they are unlikely to deliver the $100+ million repeat premieres and $300 million+ domestic releases, that cinemas have experienced this summer. In fact, theaters might not see such a blockbuster until November, when Black Panther: Wakanda Forever arrives.
