James Camerons titanic tells the story of the romance between Jack and Rose aboard the titular ship, and while the film tells a complete story, it has given way to a variety of theories, including one that suggests Jack didn’t love Rose, thus changing it completely titanic. In 1997, James Cameron brought to life what was then his most ambitious project: titanica disaster drama based on the real-life tragedy of the RMS Titanic in 1912.
Even though titanic Based on a real event and many minor characters are also based on real passengers on the ship, its main story is fictional, as is its main couple. titanic, then tells the story of Rose DeWitt Bukater (Kate Winslet), a young first-class woman, and Jack Dawson (Leonardo DiCaprio), a third-class passenger, who over the course of four days meet, fall in love, and defend their Romance in front of those who look down on her, primarily Rose’s fiancé Cal Hockley (Billy Zane) and her mother Ruth (Frances Fisher). Rose and Jack’s romance is at the heart of titanicand while the film tells their full story, with a tragic ending when Jack died after the ship went down, theories abound as to their relationship.
titanic is narrated by old Rose (Gloria Stuart), treasure hunter Brock Lovett (Bill Paxton), his crew and her granddaughter, who had never heard of Jack Dawson as his name was not on the ship’s records. Well, one theory is that Jack wasn’t the kindhearted guy Rose described in her story, and he was actually a con man and a thief who had other things on his mind when he met Rose, completely independent of getting into to fall in love with her .
Theory: Jack didn’t really love Rose in Titanic
A theory posted on Reddit explains that Jack was a con artist and thief who never loved Rose, using different moments titanic to support this idea. The first hint of this comes in Jack’s very first scene: the poker game where he and his best friend Fabrizio won their tickets to the Titanic. The author states that Jack’s line “if you have nothing, you have nothing to lose‘ was a bluff to make their opponents think they were desperate and about to drop their guard. Another bluff was when Jack Rose was about to jump off the ship: Jack famously told Rose that if she jumped he would jump after her, but he never had that intention as it would have done nothing except kill them both.
Jack only wanted two things from Rose: sex and money, and since Rose was naive and already vulnerable after their first awkward encounter, it would have been easy to get both from her. Jack stayed with her to see how much money or other stuff he could get from her and the author suggests that he stole the Heart of the Ocean but when Rose believed his story Lovejoy put it in his coat (a coat he took from a first-class passenger, by the way), she said in her story. One more moment in titanic that might indicate that Jack didn’t love Rose and had no intention of running away with her when the ship arrived in America as Rose told him she would disembark with him when the ship docked and Jack looked surprised and said it was a crazy idea to her – and before that he had told her how much he loved being free from attachment and responsibility so there was no way he was giving that up for a girl he had just met and was dating wasn’t really interested.
Why Jack Saved Rose’s Life (If He Didn’t Love Her)
While Jack may not have loved Rose according to this theory, that doesn’t mean he was a villain – he did have a good heart, but he wasn’t interested in loving a wealthy, naive girl he just met ( and who might not have been an interesting person at all). The author explains that Jack was grateful when Rose saved him from drowning when he was arrested for stealing the Heart of the Ocean and did his best to protect her while the ship sank. Why Jack ended up sacrificing himself titanic He didn’t do it out of love to save Rose, and the author lists some of the reasons Jack might have done it: chivalry (it was 1912 after all), gratitude for saving his life, guilt at the theft Diamond and played with her and he was a decent guy which meant he would have let anyone else come to the door but Rose just happened to be with him.
How this Jack & Rose theory changed the Titanic
If Jack was a scammer and thief using only rose then then titanic would stop being a love story and instead be the story of a young woman being taken advantage of by an ambitious man and never realizing it. Not only does the theory erase the love story between Jack and Rose, but it actually makes Rose’s story tragic, as she didn’t find happiness with Jack since he didn’t love her, and she wouldn’t find happiness with Cal either, since he didn’t love her either, and their mother only used them to keep them from losing their social status. On a positive note, her relationship with Jack (mutual or not) allowed her to escape a marriage that would have left her unhappy and it pretty much set her free, but the sad part is that she continued to believe that Jack really loved her when he only wanted money and other things that had nothing to do with love.
The Jack Dawson theory fits the idea that Rose was an unreliable narrator on Titanic
A popular idea about titanic says Rose is an unreliable narrator, this is based on titanic shows scenes she wasn’t present in, but she supposedly tells Lovett and company why the scenes are being shown in the first place. This theory that Jack doesn’t love Rose actually fits with the idea that Rose is an unreliable narrator as she tells the story of a man she thought was in love with her and saved her life as final proof of his love , but really Jack wasn’t the “good man,” she thought, and following that line, the rest of the characters were certainly not as she described them in her story.
The Trouble With The Titanic Jack Didn’t Love Rose Theory
Although Jack never loved Rose titanic gives the story a whole new perspective, there’s not much to support the theory. All the “evidence” presented by the author can only be their interpretations of certain moments, and in some cases they feel like a huge exaggeration or over-analysis of certain details that may not have any meaning at all. Of course, and as mentioned above, the theory changes completely too titanic as it turns a tragic love story into the tragic story of a young woman being used by her closest confidants and it also means that Rose cannot be trusted at all as she doesn’t tell an accurate story. titanic told a whole story with few loose ends, but that doesn’t mean there can’t be different interpretations of it, and while Jack was certainly not a scammer and thief who used rose to get sex and money, it’s an interesting one Perspective that can completely change the viewing experience titanic.
