Top Gun: Maverick hit theaters just in time for the start of summer on Memorial Day. With rave reviews and a wave of box-goers flocking to major blockbusters, it surpassed $1 billion at the global box office. And July eclipsed 45 days in theaters, which is when other films from the same studio have started streaming.

But Top Gun: Maverick doesn’t play by the same rules.

Where will Top Gun: Maverick stream first?

Top Gun: Maverick expected to stream on first Outstanding plus. The film is distributed by Paramount Pictures, which is owned by the same parent company as Paramount Plus.

When is the Top Gun: Maverick streaming release date to watch at home?

Paramount has yet to set a streaming release date for the Top Gun sequel, but expect to wait longer. Paramount Plus’ timing may align with the company’s past patterns, but it’s best to believe Paramount executives’ comments that they are willing to keep the film in theaters for an unusually long time.

With previous live-action films, Paramount has tended to show them exclusively in theaters for at least 45 days before making them available for streaming on Paramount Plus. If Top Gun: Maverick had stuck to that 45-day schedule, it would have been available to stream on July 18, the day after it ended its 45th day in theaters. Other Paramount films – Jackass Forever in February, The Lost City in March and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 in April – all arrived on Paramount Plus on the 46th day of their theatrical release.

But Paramount doesn’t make movies available to stream like clockwork. Scream, which hit theaters late last year, lasted about a week longer at around 53 days.

More importantly, Paramount has announced it will keep Top Gun: Maverick in theaters longer than these other films.

In May, Paramount CEO Bob Bakish hinted that Top Gun: Maverick would not make the 45-day timeline, according to a New York Times report. Bakish echoed the comments made by the company’s chief financial officer a few weeks earlier. “There are certain films that are really made for the cinematic experience. Top Gun is a great example of that,” CFO Naveen Chopra said at an investor conference. “You should see this film in a theater and it will stay in theaters longer.”

How much longer this “longer period” will be is unclear for the time being.

Will streaming be “free”?

Good news is that you probably won’t be charged any extra for streaming Top Gun: Maverick. Paramount Plus has never charged an additional fee to watch a movie through its service. And even though it has two different tiers, there’s never a movie behind the higher-priced membership tier.

However, Paramount Plus requires a paid subscription, so nothing on the service is literally free — unless you’re viewing it while signed up for a free trial. By default, Paramount Plus offers all new members a seven-day free trial.
