While it has long been rumored that Vincent D’Onofrio and Charlie Cox would return to the MCU full-time, we recently received confirmation that the actors will both be appearing on Disney+ hawk eye spin off, echo. And what better way to celebrate the news than to see one of Vincent D’Onofrio’s most famous performances in full metal jacket, streaming on Netflix now? Are you a fan of Stanley Kubrick? How about heartbreaking war movies? Well, if you haven’t seen the Oscar-nominated film yet, now is your chance!

full metal jacket follows the story of a platoon of Marines as they prepare and eventually depart to serve in the Vietnam War. The first half of the film is set on Parris Island, South Carolina, where the men go through practice after practice under the watchful and terrorizing eye of their leader, Gunnery Sergeant Hartman (Lee Ermey). Here we meet our two main characters, JT Davis (Matthew Modine) and Leonard Lawrence (Vincent D’Onofrio), who call themselves Joker and Pyle. As the men complete their training, it quickly becomes apparent that not all of them have what it takes to fight in war, as mental illness is rampant. The second half of the film takes viewers to Vietnam, specifically to the cities of Da Nang and HuĂȘ during the Tet offensive. As you can imagine, things get bloody and brutal fast in a heartbreaking story about the atrocities and realities of the Vietnam War. While an all-time classic, it certainly isn’t the happiest Vincent D’Onofrio movie to stream on Netflix.

Like another Vietnam-centric film of the decade, train, Kubrick’s war epic took the audience and let them into the heart of the action. From the battles in the barracks with their insane leaders to their mental health issues and the moral implications of a war that many of the troops opposed, audiences were taken on a rollercoaster of emotions throughout the war film. Vincent D’Onofrio’s role as Lawrence, aka Pyle, has been said to be the hardest to cast in the film, now available on Netflix. While we don’t want to spoil it for you, his character has perhaps the saddest storyline, something that Kubrick looked for the right actor to portray.

In addition to directing, Kubrick also wrote the screenplay with Michael Herr and Gustav Hasford. The story was an adaptation of Hasford’s 1979 novel, The short-term drivers. For their work on the feature film, the trio received an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay. The harsh realities that unfolded throughout the nearly two-hour film was an instant hit with audiences and critics alike. standing now full metal jacket (named for the bullets used by US troops fighting in Vietnam), has a 92% critic rating and a 94% viewer rating on Rotten Tomatoes. In addition to the story, the acting also carries the film beyond itself. Starring not only Vincent D’Onofrio, but also Matthew Modine, Lee Ermey, Adam Baldwin, Arliss Howard, Kevyn Major Howard, Dorian Harewood and Tim Colceri, it’s no wonder Netflix wants to get their hands on the film for its cinephile followers too see.
